Dido and Aeneas

A Selection of Anthems

In the ancient setting of the Church of the Holy Rude, Stirling, enjoy a selection of Purcell's Anthems and one of the earliest known operas, Dido and Aeneas, c.1688.

 

Dido and Aeneas, with libretto by Nahum Tate, was Purcell's only true opera. It is the story of the mythical queen of Carthage who killed herself when abandoned by the Trojan hero, Aeneas.

Four wonderful soloists will join us, Ulrike Wutscher (Dido), Phil Gault (Aeneas), Colleen Nicoll (Belinda) and David Douglas (sorceror & sailor); a String Ensemble accompany us; and Kevin Duggan will direct from the harpsichord.

*Please note the change from our more usual venue to the Church of the Holy Rude, Stirling.

Parking will be available on the castle esplanade until 10pm (the concert will finish not later than 9.30pm
